Authentic Assessment Assignment
Our next big paper is coming up soon, and I wanted to get you to start thinking about this assignment. We've been spending time looking at
various forms of assessment, but focusing more lately on authentic forms
of assessment.
You may be wondering, though, what makes an assessment "authentic?"
While you will spend your time exploring this and other questions in the paper, think about the differences we've seen from assessments such as Brigance or DIAL-4 earlier in the semester. Think about the conversations you had on your blogs about how different it is to assess (and to be assessed) in a situation where you or a child is pulled away from work/play to be asked questions that are not related to the tasks that were being worked on beforehand. Think about your own experiences when taking tests, and how that made you feel. Did you feel that the tests accurately captured all that you knew about the topic? Could there have been other ways to share your knowledge in a way that didn't leave you feeling so nervous or under pressure?
Keep these thoughts in mind as you discuss authentic assessment in your paper. You are not obligated to argue in favor of these methods; however, if you are going to argue against their usage, you should include several scholarly resources that support your thesis.
The instruction sheet asks you to include at least 3 in-class readings. This will show me that you are able to synthesize the material into your thinking. However, you are not required to ONLY use 3 readings, and not all of them have to be from this class. You likely have resources from outside the class, or need further evidence to support your points. I highly encourage you to use outside resources ON TOP of the three in-class readings.
Also, this is the first major assignment where you can submit your work to the No‘eau Writing Center for the 30 points. Once you submit your paper, you will receive a confirmation email from them. Please forward me that email, and I will update your grade as soon as I receive it. If you submit it to the No‘eau Writing Center right before or after you've already submitted the assignment on Laulima, I cannot give you credit as you would not have had time to incorporate their feedback.
Please keep in mind that this is a Writing Intensive class, and as such, I am required to spend more time grading and focusing on your writing (including but not limited to, spelling/grammar, thesis development, formatting, APA usage, etc.) and your grade will reflect this. Paying close attention to these things before submitting your assignment equals an easy way to earn points, or a silly way to lose them.
As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns about this assignment.
And, just as a final reminder this assignment is due Sunday, March 10th before midnight.
