How to Use Appendices

For your final paper, you have been collecting observations and documentation that will be used to tell the story of the child you are documenting.

In addition to your culminating piece, where you will select the appropriate pieces that you think will help appropriately tell the story of your child's development, you will use these pieces of evidence throughout your paper.

However, instead of including long quotations and images IN your paper, you will only refer to them in the paper, placing the larger objects (quotes, observations, running records, photographs, etc.) into the appendices.

Each Appendix, labeled in alphabetical order, should only have ONE object in it. That means if you have 3 running records, 2 anecdotal records, and 2 photographs, EACH will get it's own appendix. It may look like this:
  • Appendix A
    • Running Record #1
  • Appendix B
    • Anecdotal Record #1
  • Appendix C
    • Photograph #1
  • Appendix D
    • Running Record #2
  • Appendix E
    • Running Record #3
  • Appendix F
    • Anecdotal Record #2
  • Appendix G
    • Photograph #2
What you should be doing in your paper is only using them as a reference. For example, "When Johnny ran up the slide and said, 'Hi Ms. Brooke!' (Appendix A), this shows not only his large motor skills, but also his social emotional skills." Meanwhile, in Appendix A, the entire record of what took place, including the date and all of the other pertinent information, will be located. Only the most required part of the observation is noted in the document, and the labeling of which appendix it is in allows me to go find the entire scene.

Keep in mind that whatever is in Appendix A will be the first thing referred to in the paper. The second item will be in Appendix B. The third in Appendix C, and so on. When reading your paper, it is not appropriate to have the first item referenced be, say, Appendix H.

I've included a sample paper, not from this class, which highlights how I am expecting the appendices to be used in your own paper. Please take a look at the "Sample APA Paper" for formatting information. There you will also notice that each appendix has its own page, and many items are not squeezed into one page.

Should your document become too large of a file to submit, please use this website's information about how to resize the file by compressing the photos.

If you have any questions pertaining to how to use the appendices, please let me know.
